This chapter also deals with the meaning, nature and subject matter of Sociology. The study of the origin of Sociology is also a part of this chapter.

None of the subjects can exist alone. That’s why there is quite a healthy relationship between Sociology and other social sciences. Sociology not only takes help from other social sciences but also contributes to the growth of other subjects.

Scholars have different views about the nature and scope of Sociology. Few scholars call it a special science but some scholars only call Sociology a general science.

Sociology originated in Europe because the word Sociology was used for the first time by a French philosopher ‘Auguste Comte’ in 1839 A.D.

Feminist Theories: It is a sociological perspective that emphasises the centrality of gender in analysing the social world. There are a number of strands of feminist theory, but all of them have a common desire to explain gender equalities in society and to work to overcome them.

Empirical Investigation: It is a factual enquiry carried out in any given area of sociological study.

Macrosociology: Macrosociology is the study of large-scale groups, organisations or social systems.

Microsociology: Microsociology is the study of human behaviour in contexts of face-to-face interaction.
